The unemployment rate in Brazil continued its march upwards with 14.2 million people unemployed at the end of March, says the Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
An increase of 14.9% from the previous quarter, and an increase of 1.8 million people unemployed. According to the IBGE, the unemployment rate closed March at 13.7 percent, with a rise of 1.7% compared to the October-December 2016 quarter.
The average real income of Brazilian workers remained stable in the quarter ended in March (R$ 2,110). In relation to the previous quarter, there was a rise for employees in the public sector (1.9%) and for domestic workers (1.7%). In relation to the same quarter of 2016, only the employees in the public sector received an increase (4.3%).
